Born from the genius of Ferdinand Porsche, Volkswagen became one of the great automotive success stories. The famed VW Type 1 also known as the VW Beetle became the most mass-produced car in history.

Against the desires of many enthusiasts, and as Porsche would do in the late 1990's, Volkswagen abandoned their Ferdinand Porsche-designed flat 4 air-cooled engine in favor of traditional inline 4 cylinder water-cooled design.
